Lemon balm

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a well-known herb native to South-Central Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, Iran, and Central Asia. It has been known since ancient times and now grows all over the world. The name ”lemon balm” derives from the characteristic, mild lemon fragrance of its wrinkled, egg-shaped leaves which have scalloped edges.

The ancient Greeks and Romans recognized that Lemon Balm helps to heal wounds. Since then, we know that Lemon Balm extract has antimicrobial and antiviral effects on the skin. Lemon Balm was mentioned as a ”comforter of the human’s heart” in one of the oldest Hungarian Book of Herbs (Lippay, 1664). We all know that it has calming and soothing effects on our bodies.

Lemon Balm was originally native to the region and Hungary is one of the major growers and producers of this plant since the climate is ideal for the growth and cultivation.
